Communication is key for responders. When done well, it helps gain compliance, access key information, and provides a level of safety for the responder. When done incorrectly, situations can quickly escalate and may even lead to use of force situations, angry citizens, and even media attention. This course provides strategies to effectively communicate with people of all backgrounds by providing simple but profound guidelines on human nature. It also provides tips on what to say, how to say it, and maybe most importantly, what NOT to say to avoid escalating conversations. This course meets standard guidelines for recruit training and on-going Colorado POST de-escalation requirements.
