Emergency responders and public safety personnel frequently interact with people experiencing mental health crises or undiagnosed concerning behaviors. Having a foundational knowledge about some of these conditions, such as neurodevelopmental disorders, mood disorders, and personality disorders can be extremely helpful in increasing empathy, bridging communication challenges, and helping locate appropriate resources. This course is highly suggested for any responder actively working with the public and can even be helpful in identifying concerning behaviors amongst their peers.

Course Objectives

  • Discuss the subjectivity of “normality” and the challenges people diagnosed with mental illness face in seeking help and getting treatment.

  • Discover some of the most commonly diagnosed mental illnesses, including neurodevelopmental disorders, mood disorders, and personality disorders.

  • Identify signs and symptoms of common disorders and how these often present themselves in everyday life.

  • Discuss some of the more common disorders that responders also suffer from, how to identify those symptoms in your peers, and how to best intervene.
