Though it is impossible to fully prepare to be involved in a critical incident, pre-planning and preparation are a necessity.  Families are an important component that can be overlooked in this process, leaving them feeling unprepared and anxious.  This course is intended to be viewed by the responder with his/her partner and/or adult support structure to be available to fill in blanks and to answer specific logistical or procedural questions.  Please be advised, this is a heavy topic that can produce emotion.  We recommend watching this away from children and in a safe environment to engage in serious conversation.

Meet Your Instructors:

Emily Hitchings

Now the Director of Agency Partnerships and Programming at NERPSC, Emily was a police officer for nearly 17 years. As the employee support officer, she led their peer support team and managed wellness programs for her department. Emily is recognized state-wide for her work and has been pivotal in helping build wellness programs for departments of all sizes across the country. Emily is a certified financial master coach and a responder curriculum instructor for the Center for Relationship Education (CRE). This curriculum teaches responders effective communication skills that can benefit their personal and professional relationships. She is also currently working on a MA in counseling, to assist emergency responders through therapy, crisis response, and trauma treatment.

Becky Edmonds, MA, MFTC

Becky Edmonds graduated with her master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Regis University and obtained her bachelor’s degree from the University of Phoenix. During her studies at Regis University, Becky specialized in therapy aimed at teens and kids. She utilizes play therapy and experiential therapy skills when working with kids and teens struggling with depression, anxiety, grief, suicidal ideation, and trauma. Utilizing play therapy or experiential skills with families allows Becky to partner with all family members and work through communication concerns, family reintegration, substance abuse issues, and joint parenting after divorce. She also has her EMDR certification for use with children and adolescents.
