Responders help people in crisis every day at work, but the same problems must be approached differently when they are experienced by a fellow responder or close friend. This course aims to provide basic counseling skills to help you be approachable and relatable when intervening with a fellow responder in crisis. This course is ideally geared toward providing peer supporters basic intervention skills, but could also be useful for supervisors, fellow responders, or even family members looking to approach a difficult conversation with a responder. This can be taken as a single course, or as part of the peer support curriculum.

Course Objectives

  • Identify strategies to be an effective peer counselor, including nurturing interpersonal skills, emotion identification, and learning how to demonstrate proper empathy.

  • Develop basic counseling skills such as paraphrasing, reinforcement responses, using silence, proper questioning techniques, and listening skills.

  • Discuss the steps of motivational interviewing to help promote positive life change.

  • Explore specific counseling skills for those experiencing suicidal ideations.

Meet Your Instructors:

Tiffany Crist, LMFT

Tiffany is originally from Montreal, Canada, where she was raised in a LE family and has fond memories of going on ride-alongs with her father. She received her master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Regis University and predominantly works with adults, couples and families to address relationship struggles, anxiety, depression, trauma/PTSD, parenting and behavioral issues and phase of life transitions. Tiffany is an EMDR trained therapist. Her approach to working with clients also includes Relational Life, Cognitive-Behavioral, Solution-Focused and general systems therapies. Tiffany also has an extensive training background in personal and professional development, supporting teams to establish healthy workplace environments.
